Saving During the Holidays

by maria on November 3, 2011

Now that the holidays are upon us, many families are scurrying to find ways to cut holiday spending.  Retailers have become very competitive and offer sales in stores as well as online with free shipping all through the holidays.   Through the power of the Internet, holiday shopping can be as easy as sitting in your PJs with a cup of hot chocolate and getting items at the lowest price + free shipping.  Be sure to follow your favorite retailers on Facebook and signup for their emails.  Check the websites below to ring in the savings!:

Billshrink.com – Looking to purchase new cell phones for Christmas? Check this site to make sure you are getting a good price on phones and plans.  Speaking of smartphones, be sure to download ShopSavy, Nextag, and GeoQpon apps to your smartphone to find the lowest price on an item and any discounts while you are in a store.  If you find a lower price or discount on the app, be sure to show the cashier to see if they will price match.

BlackFriday.com sign up to preview all Black Friday deals and ads.  Be sure to print and take the ads with you when you shop – some stores may price match (ex: Walmart) so you can get all your deals in one stop.

Ebates.com – Get cash back on your online purchases by starting at ebates.com.

Freeshippingday.com – Over 600 stores have joined to offer free shipping on Dec. 16th (items guaranteed to arrive before Christmas.)

Retailmenot.com – find promotional discount codes for online retailers to get discounts, dollars off, free shipping and more!

Priceprotectr.com makes it simple to watch prices, keep track of your purchases, and get rebates off price drops.  Simply copy and paste the website address (URL) where you see the item to add it to your cart.  Enter your email address and you will be notified when that product goes on sale.

Be sure to check The Lifeboat (www.thelifeboat.info) and Like on Facebook for late breaking news on ways to save for the holidays!

Frugal Fall Family Fun

by maria on October 5, 2011

Fall is my favorite time of the year and is the best time to enjoy free or low cost family fun!  With a little planning, you can find plenty of festivals, pumpkin patches and Halloween events in your area.   To find a list of fall events in Georgia, check AtlantaParent.com and AccessAtlanta.com. Also check your local Parks and Recreation website and the Georgia State Parks http://www.gastateparks.org calendars (many events are free).  Sign up for Groupon.com and Goldstar.com to get daily emails for great deals on tickets to a haunted house or pumpkin patch.  Here’s a few extra-special events to add to your calendar:

October 23-24, 30-31:  Boo at the Zoo – a spooktacular family-friendly Halloween festival www.zooatlanta.org.

October 23-24:  Georgia A-Scary-Um: a family friendly Halloween event www.georgiaaquarium.org.

October 23:  Costumes are a big part of the season, but have you considered going green this Halloween?  Take part in National Halloween Costume Swap Day at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center.   Drop off used costumes any day in October in the lobby.  http://greenhalloween.org.

October Weekends:  Frightfest at Six Flags:  Buy 3 – 2012 Season Passes for just $64.99 each and get 1 free Season’s pass + free Season Parking + Admission to FrightFest is included! http://frightfest.sixflags.com/

MORE ON COSTUMES:
Even this time of year, you can find great deals on costumes.  Shop 6pm.com for up to 75% off (http://www.6pm.com/halloween) and The Costume Express http://www.costumeexpress.com clearance section for up to 85% off costumes.  Remember the days of making your own costume?  Find How-To’s on Instructables.com for making a unique Halloween costume.  Looking for handmade and vintage costumes or decorations?  Be sure to check with etsy.com for some one-of-a-kind thriller finds.  You can find previously owned costumes on ThredUp.com for $5.00 plus s/h.  Listings with a Jack-O-Lantern icon include Halloween costumes.

HALLOWEEN GOODIES:
Having great loot to hand out is a must on Halloween.  Each year I try to offer a fun mix of candy, rings, and small toys.  I begin in early October and look for coupons in the Sunday paper, on Coupons.com, and on manufacturer websites and shop the sales each week with my coupons.  I also stop by the DollarTree to pick up candy, toys, glow-in-the dark necklaces, and other fall trinkets.

Families can find a bounty of fun in the fall while yielding a harvest of savings.

I have had a flury of activity with The Lifeboat lately!  I have my 2nd article coming out in the AroundAbout magazines and am scheduled to appear on WATL in October.  As I am working on my schedule I thought a great way to jumpstart my coupon classes is by offering one of my Bloomin’ Bargain Binders ($30.00 value) to the first 3 people that book a class in the Atlanta area and have at least 15 confirmed attendees through my registration site.  Fee is $10.00 per person.  (Note:  You will need to provide a projector and internet connection).

We can also hold as a fundraiser for your organization – I will split the proceeds 50/50.  This is a great opportunity to raise funds and help families at the same time.

Act fast to secure your spot!  Email me at helenmaddox@comcast.net

Fall means football and back-to-school shopping.  With a little preseason planning, you can stretch your clothing budget dollar!

As any coach would do, use the preseason to evaluate your team’s strengths:  sort through your children’s clothes, pass down outgrown items to younger children, and discard worn items.  Make a clothing inventory of what each child has, their sizes, and what they need.

Now that you are ready to kick off the season, the #1 play in your book should be using the power of the internet to help you combine sales, discounts, and free shipping from your favorite stores.  The easiest way to receive sales, free shipping notices and coupons is by creating a new email address just for registering with your favorite store, mall, & outlet mall websites (free email addresses are available from gmail.com or yahoo.com).  Also be sure to “like” your favorite stores on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Each week, with your clothing inventory, coupons, and discount vouchers handy, peruse the store websites and match your coupons with sale items.   Check sites like Retailmenot.com or Couponcabin.com for discount coupon codes, or search on Google with the words:  Coupon Codes + (store name) ex:  Coupon Codes Kohl’s.  Shopping retailers through a site like eBates.com will earn a rebate on money you spend.

The same approach can be used in brick and mortar stores.  Watch the sales ads online, and then visit the stores with your inventory and printouts of any discounts.  Since many retailers allow you to use their discounts on any purchase, be sure to shop clearance racks to maximize your savings.  While you are in the store, check GeoQpons or Foursquare apps on your smartphone for discounts or coupons to show the cashier.

Some of your greatest bargains may be found outside of the big box department stores.  Thrift and consignment stores often have name brand clothing for pennies on the dollar.  If you haven’t shopped in these stores before, plan regular stops at your local Goodwill to select items that are either new or next-to-new.  One one of my recent trips, I found a $60.00 Polo shirt for my son for less than $5.00.

With some preseason warmup,  you can score huge savings and a touchdown for the family budget!
